How to Become a Digital Nomad

What’s a DM (Digital Nomad)?

Before one can learn how to become a digital nomad, one must learn what exactly a digital nomad is.

A digital nomad is someone who works on their computer while they travel. Digital nomads get to see the world and make cash money while they do it. If you’re curious as to how you become a digital nomad, you’ve come to the right blog post.

But first, watch this video:

Becoming a digital nomad is not the only way to travel. You can save up a bunch of money and then head out. You can volunteer and find free accommodations. You can house sit. You can couch surf. There are many different ways to travel, but this is what worked best for me.

Step #1: Get a WFH (work from home) job.

If you are wondering where the heck you can find a remote job, look no further than the list below.

What kinds of jobs do digital nomads have? Too many to name. There are jobs for photographers, bloggers, website developers, copywriters, social media coordinators, and more.

There are very high-level positions available to simple data entry positions, from project-based jobs to salary positions.

Step #2: You don’t gotta go to work. But you gotta put in work.

Becoming a digital nomad is not for everybody. You do miss hanging out with people and collaborating in an office. And it can take a while to adjust.

You have to have the self-discipline to put in your hours every week. Being a digital nomad is not a permanent vacation. It’s a work-cation.

If you are easily distracted, this option may not be for you. It’s especially hard when you’re in countries like the Philippines when there are surfing waves knocking at your doorstep.

Set a schedule. Stick to it.

Step #3: Backup your computer.

When you actually become a digital nomad, back up everything.

Use a cloud-based storage backup program so if you accidentally drop your computer in the Kerala Backwaters of India, you’re not totally screwed.

Backblaze is the best. I did my homework on this one. It’s $95 for two years.

Step #4: Figure out where to go!

How often should you move around?

Short answer: It’s completely different for everybody.

Long answer: For me, the cheapest and most efficient way to travel is to go somewhere at least for a month. If you travel too fast, too much of your money will go to plane tickets.

Another bonus of traveling for one month at a time is the monthly discounts. Most AirBnB rentals have 40-60% discounts for one-month stays.

What holds people back?

The hardest thing about becoming a digital nomad is committing and actually doing it. Don’t think about it too much or you’ll never go.

Another tip?

Don’t do too much planning.

Who knows where you will want to go or how you will feel about a certain place once you get there. You might end up learning to surf in Costa Rica, and decide you want to spend another couple months riding perfect waves and learning Spanish.

Step #5: Get out of here!

Becoming a digital nomad is a great way to travel the world while making money. Make sure to COMMIT. Find a remote job. Stay places longer than a month.
